Like with all books I read, I try to predict the ending. As usual, I predicted wrong with this book, which is what keeps me reading Jodi Picoult's books. I knew that Chris would be found guilty no matter what, though. I thought that with the evidence of Emily's fingerprints only being on the barrel of the gun, a scenario like this played in my head: Chris decided last minute that he would kill himself first and him and Emily would argue about it, but he ended up putting the gun...

What I absolutely HATE in the movie

There's a part in the movie that just makes my blood run cold every time I hear it. Thankfully it wasn't in the book, Jodi would never write something so heinous! Anyway, it's in the treehouse, and Emily's "reflective" narrating voice is speaking, and she says something along this lines of If I could freeze a moment from my childhood, I would. UG! I mean, it's just a blatantly obvious thought. Who wouldn't freeze a favorite childhood memory?...

I don't know if your like me, but I don't agree with books being taken off of hte shelves of schools and/or public libraries. What is your oppion?

The whole book there are all these references to this very expensive watch that Emily bought, paid for, and got engraved especially for Chris' birthday, but Melanie was such a cold witch that she never gave it to Chris. So what did she do with it?

The Pact is at the moment being shown in the UK on the True Movie channel on Sky Tv (8pm Monday June 2nd 2008). Its being advertised as follows:

"Based on a true story. The Golds and the Hartes had been friends for year, until an apparent teenage suiside pact destroys the close bond between the two families. Was it really suiside - or murder?"

Erm, TRUE STORY??? Did i miss something big?? I've been reading Jodi's books for years and believed them all be...

When I was little, there was a huge thing where I live with all the local schools. At that stage we were semi-rural and there were four local high schools. A group of students from each school signed a suicide pact. They wrote it up and signed it. Then within weeks of each other they killed themselves.

They didn't seek help.
They didn't speak about it.

The Creep?

I can't help thinking that in a later book, there'd be a twist and the Creep would eventually get what was coming to him. It doesn't seem right that he never had to suffer any consequence for what he did (and probably continued doing!) while Emily and Chris both had their lives torn apart.

Although the title of the book is "The Pact", implying that there is only one pact, there are many pacts made throughout the book. What are some of them? How do pacts influence our society today? Do you think that we disregard them too much?Can you think of ways that they are presented in our society (i.e, media, politics, etc.)?

Was HORRIBLE!
Its not even close to the book. I mean i know that they cant get it exact...but come on...its SO bad. It was on eariler today and i recorded it. but it was just terrible.

dont watch it, it kind of ruins the story

Mistakes in the book?

I know this is VERY silly, but:

I just finished the book last night and a couple things have been bugging me (this is just the way I am). I was wondering if anyone else noticed mistakes in the book. For instance, they say that Chris' birthday is in November and Emily's is in May, but then Michael says during the trial that they are only 3 months apart. They mention Kate being 12 when Chris gets taken away to jail (in 1997), and then has her 15th birthday in February 2008....

Did anyone else think.....

I just got done reading the Pact and I thought it was amazing. I loved this story from beginning to end.
The speech that was delievered at the end of the book by Jordan was so powerful and really had me questioning ideas between truth vs, pure evidence and facts. Brillianttt!
I was so happy to find Chris not guilty at the end of the novel! One of my favorite parts was when he took the stand and told his story for all to hear. It required so much strength from him and I was so shocked...

I really think that Melanie knew about what happened to Emily at McDonalds, isn't that what happened when she found Melanie's diary, read it from front to back, threw it in the fireplace and then got sick? I just don' t understand why she wouldn't tell anyone.
I also think that Emily resents Chris, because he is the one who sent her in the men's bathroom on a dare. I think that she secretly blames him for the awful experience that she had.

I haven't read all of the other postings, so I apologize if this has already been covered.

I've read several other of the author's books, and found The Pact to be disappointing. It seemed sloppy - first of all,Thomas, Jordan's son, flies to Paris on Christmas day for a Christmas day wedding. Secondly, the suicide took place on November 7th, and the trial started on May 7th. That's only 6 months, but in several places, it's stated that it's 7 months. Lastly, Chris tells someone that...

There wasn't actually much of a twist in the ending of the pact, usually jodi always has a surprising ending. I was disappointed that emily didn't tell Chris about the sexual abuse before she was shot. He could have bought that up in the courtroom when he was on the stand and the jury would believe even more that emily was sucidal and chris didn't just kill her. The art therapist would have backed his story up.
It was a romantic novel the way they both half pulled the trigger wehn emily...
